Frequently Asked Questions
What is Disc Golf?
Disc golf is a grassroots sport that plays much like "ball golf," except we throw a flying disc (aka "Frisbee") into a metal basket that is placed on above ground on a pole.
Where do you play?
There are nearly 2700 disc golf courses throughout the world, with most found in the United States. Most courses have 18 "holes," though some have 9-holes and others 21- or 24-holes.
Can I use my own Frisbee?
Yes and no. If you want to just try the sport out and see what its all about, sure...go ahead and take your own flying disc out there. After just a short while though, you'll find that a throw-and-catch disc does not fly far enough to really be effective on a disc golf course.
Ideally, disc golfers carry a variety of very specialized golf discs. Much like ball golfers have driver clubs, mid-range, and putters, disc golfers have an assortment of discs in their bag, so they can use the appropriate flyer for any situation in which they find themselves.
How much does it cost?
This is one of the best aspects of disc golf. Most courses around the country are found in public parks, so they are free to play. The equipment is also relatively inexpensive, usually costing less than $20 per disc. Of course, you can play with one disc, if you want, but most players carry at least 10-15 in their bag during a round.
Where can I find a course near me?
The Professional Disc Golf Association maintains a comprehensive Disc Golf Course Directory that lists most of the courses in the 30 nations that maintain them.
How about the discs? Where can I buy them?
A growing number of sporting goods stores in your area are carrying golf discs in their inventory. Usually, there are also specialty shops near courses that carry discs, as well. In addition, you can sometimes find people on the course selling discs directly from their car. Of course, the Internet has quite a few stores now who are competing for your disc golf business.
